Takayama, located in Japan’s mountainous Gifu Prefecture, is a city where traditional culture and natural beauty are remarkably well preserved. Often called “Little Kyoto,” Takayama retains a charming old town with wooden merchant houses, sake breweries, and morning markets that reflect life in the Edo period. The surrounding Hida region offers breathtaking landscapes, from lush forests and terraced rice fields to alpine peaks ideal for hiking and outdoor exploration. Takayama also serves as a gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage village of Shirakawa-go, known for its iconic gassho-zukuri farmhouses with steep thatched roofs designed to withstand heavy snowfall.
